Protected Data - Trusted Services
In Nov 2007 Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, apologised to the House for the bulk loss of Child Benefit data – involving 7.25m claimants and their bank accounts. “We have a duty to everything that we can to protect the public,” said Mr Brown.
In the video Janet Callender, Chair of Government Connect and the Local Government Delivery Council, says that it is the responsibility of everyone across government to “build confidence in our ability to protect data and efficiently deliver more personalised services to our citizens”. To do this requires the effective use of information collected across government without risking data loss or exposure to fraud. “Government Connect provides a real solution to some of these challenges. It can really drive and enable service transformation,” she says.
Kenny Robertson, Transformational Government Director at DWP believes that “Government Connect allows local authorities to share data, securely, effectively and efficiently with local authorities and central government; and that allows us to address the inherent security risks that we are faced with on a day to day basis across government.”
The video goes on to explore some of the many opportunities now presented by GCSX, including Devon County Council’s Trading Standards, Torbay Children’s Services’ safeguarding children pilot and the new secure communication flow between councils and DWP improving the delivery of housing benefit and council tax benefit. Stephen Jones, Director for Finance and Performance at the LGA, also highlights how the future role of local government – at the frontline of service delivery – can be enhanced by this secure communications channel and access to central government systems. “Getting all councils on the Government Connect network is such a big step forward... There are some exciting opportunities here to deliver services better as we share data more effectively.”
